Robert Jan Brummer

Professor of Gastroenterology and Clinical Nutrition at Örebro University

Robert Jan Brummer is Professor of Gastroenterology and Clinical Nutrition at Örebro University, where he has worked since 2008, and has served as Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Health since 2010. He holds an MD, is specialised in internal medicine and gastroenterology, and obtained his PhD in Sweden in 1992. He previously held a professorship in medical nutrition and clinical dietetics at Maastricht University. 
His research focuses on the interactions between nutrition, the gut microbiota, the gastrointestinal tract, and the brain, with a strong interdisciplinary approach bridging clinical practice, psychiatry, and physiology. His work aims to improve understanding of common gastrointestinal disorders and contribute to future strategies supporting brain health, including stress, mood, and cognition. 
He is also deeply engaged in medical education and academic leadership, with a focus on student-centred and lifelong learning approaches. As Dean, he supports the development of an internationally competitive academic environment. 
Brummer’s work integrates clinical research and public–private collaboration, with a strong emphasis on translating scientific knowledge into societal impact and improving health outcomes.
